MIDWEST LAKE HOUSE
In collaboration with Alexis Blake Interiors, we were engaged to create four custom furniture pieces for a new vacation condo on Lake Waubesa in Madison, WI.
One piece we designed was a 48" round dining table. To fit the client's desired aesthetic of "airy lake home" meets "rustic industrial chic", we settled on a table design that incorporated both barnwood and steel. For the table top, we sourced various reclaimed barnwood from Iowa and Wisconsin and with the help of a local Wisconsin woodworker, had it sanded smooth and custom stained. We wrapped the barnwood table top in a steel border with exposed rivets to give it a bit of industrial flair. For the table base, we designed a steel pedestal base and custom finished it by brushing the steel to give it a slightly "hammered" look and applied a matte clear powder coat. The steel fabrication was completed by a local artisan in Iowa. To complement the dining table, we custom painted dining chairs selected by Alexis Blake interiors using a light cream matte powder coat.
We also designed a 105" long storage credenza to be situated in the same room as the dining table. To offer a variety of storage options, we segmented the credenza into five sections, alternating between drawers and push to open doors with interior shelving. In keeping with the aesthetic of the dining table, we utilized a mixture of reclaimed barnwood sourced from Wisconsin and Iowa and applied it in a fun chevron pattern. To keep the lines of the credenza fairly sleek, we did not utilize any exterior hardware and instead designed all of the drawers and doors to be push to open with a soft close. We finished the barnwood by sanding it smooth and applying a custom stain. To bring this piece to life, we partnered with a local Wisconsin woodworker and a local Wisconsin cabinetmaker.
Above the credenza, we designed and installed four reclaimed barnwood shelves. With the help of a steel artisan in Iowa, we custom fabricated steel brackets for the shelves and finished them to match the color of the dining table pedestal base.
Queen over Queen Bunk Beds
In addition to the pieces for the dining and living area, we were also asked to design bunk beds for our clients' guest room. Because the client wanted to maximize sleeping space, we created large, queen-over-queen bunk beds with ample head space designed to sleep adults. To craft the bunk beds, we sourced reclaimed Douglas Fir barnwood from Iowa, sanded it and sealed it with a soft, matte clear finish that showcased the natural color and feel of the barnwood. For the hardware, we designed custom steel braces and a custom ladder made from industrial piping. To finish the braces and the ladder, we sandblasted them and applied a matte clear powder coat. We partnered with two talented artisans in Iowa to construct the bunk beds and purchased all materials for the piece in the Midwest.
We loved working with Alexis Blake Interiors to design stunning pieces for this special lakeside condo and cannot wait to collaborate on future projects!
