WHEN

2019

In 2019, a Madison client engaged FarmStrong Design to create custom furniture for his new lakeside home.  The client was heavily focused on two specifics rooms  - his downstairs bar area, where he would frequently entertain guests, and his home office, where he would spend ample time.

Bar Table

One special part of our client's downstairs bar area was his ping pong table, where he frequently would play with his sons and guests.  To provide a small seating area for his family and guests to convene around during ping pong matches, we designed a custom 42" diameter bar height cocktail table.  Our client was seeking a luxurious, moody and slightly industrial vibe.  To achieve this, we chose to use a deep, rich colored walnut for the table top.  To ensure the piece had both substance and texture, we sourced a thick walnut slab with a beautiful live edge and applied a natural feeling, yet waterproof finish.  For the table base, we custom designed and fabricated legs made from industrial piping and then blasted them and applied a matte clear powder coat to give them a sleek, even finish.  To make this beautiful piece come to life, we partnered with a local Wisconsin woodworker and an individual steel fabricator in Iowa.

Bar Shelves

To complement the walnut cocktail table and help tie the space together, we also sourced and constructed four matching walnut shelves for our client to hang above his existing bar.  Since the shelves would be in a bar area, we applied a durable, waterproof finish.

Desk

For our client's office space, we designed a pair of complementary desks. For each of the desks, we used a mixture of reclaimed barn-wood and steel to provide a rustic, industrial vibe. For the first desk, we custom fabricated a steel frame with a waterfall leg on one side and two minimalistic legs on the other side.  The solid waterfall leg enabled our client to conceal the cords running from the desk, while the minimalistic legs helped the piece feel airier. For the top, we worked with a local Wisconsin woodworker to inlay reclaimed barn wood. We also applied steel rivets to the outside border of the desk top for an extra industrial touch. To finish the steel, we opted to keep the natural mill scale steel color and applied a matte clear powder coat for a sleek, industrial look.

Storage Unit

For the second desk, our client was looking to add storage space while keeping a similar aesthetic to the first desk.  To achieve this, we designed a custom storage desk featuring a double waterfall steel top/frame and a reclaimed barn-wood façade. We split the storage desk into four sections, with push to open doors leading to built in filing cabinets and shelving. We chose to utilize push to open doors so that we could best maintain the sleek lines of the piece and not require external hardware. For this piece, we collaborated with a local Wisconsin woodworker, a local Wisconsin cabinetmaker and an Iowa steel artisan.
